As the weather cools down, our homes become more enclosed, and the air we breathe is recirculated over and over. As a result, this is the logical time of year to be most mindful of our indoor air quality (IAQ). It’s the best time to give your entire air management system a checkup. Start with your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Be sure its air filters are cleaned or replaced, as well as those of your range hood. Likewise, if you have a fireplace, or any other fuel-burning unit, make sure its exhaust (i.e., flue) is airtight and clear of obstruction. You can further your assurance of clean air in the home by having carpets, drapery and upholstery cleaned, and by installing individual air cleaners or filters in any rooms that are of particular concern.
